It was trial by flower for Ashley and Chelsea when they were introduced to their family's new floral shop.Roxanne Cameron took over Middleton Valley Rose in June after the former owner Catherine DenHaan retired. So it was fast into the world of June weddings, proms and graduations that her daughter Ashley and stepdaughter Chelsea received a crash course in floral design. Not only did the pair survive, they seem to thrive in their new jobs, according to Cameron. "I was pleasantly surprised at how quickly they picked it up," she said. "It's one of those things you either can or can't do, and they both seem to have a creative flair. I'm very lucky." For a time she worked as a florist at The Greenery, in Halifax. When she and her family relocated to Middleton a few years ago, she took a job with the Liquor Commission. While she enjoyed the change of pace, she longed to work with flowers again. Earlier this year Cameron began job shadowing with DenHaan to get a sense of running the business, and even though she is no longer involved with the business, she continues to remain a tremendous resource. "I have Catherine on speed-dial," she said. A few traditions that begin with DenHaan are being faithfully carried on. Thirsty hounds will always find a bowl of fresh water on the sidewalk complete with complementary doggie treats. Cat lovers however, are not so blessed. At least 25 people have come in looking for Daisy, the shop cat. Cameron is please to report that Daisy is happy and healthy, and enjoying her own retirement at home with Catherine. "I want people to remember they still have a place where they can buy fresh flowers," she said. "And it's worth it to watch as people notice the petals. They may not stop, but they will smile." "I love this town," she said. "It reminds me of my hometown in Saskatchewan. I decided I wanted to make this home for my kids. I wanted them to have a job opportunity here that interests them and encourages them to stay."
